Annapolis is a major sailing centre and a convenient starting point for exploring the northern and central bay. Further south, the waterways around the York and Rappahannock rivers provide additional cruising possibilities.

The principal sailing season runs from late spring through autumn, with summer offering warmer conditions and longer daylight hours.

Florida Keys, United States

Stretching southwest from mainland Florida, the Florida Keys form a chain of islands between the Atlantic Ocean and Florida Bay.

The cruising grounds include the waters around Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon and Key West, with opportunities for snorkelling, fishing and exploring the islands' distinctive coastal communities.

The Keys offer a relaxed subtropical sailing experience, although shallow waters, reefs and channels demand careful navigation. Charter arrangements and permitted cruising areas depend on the operator and vessel.

The cooler months, generally from late autumn through spring, are particularly attractive for sailing.

The Bahamas

The Bahamas comprise an extensive archipelago of islands and shallow banks extending southeast from Florida.

Two of the best-known yacht charter areas are the Abacos and the Exumas.

The Abacos are renowned for their sheltered cruising waters, traditional island settlements and attractive anchorages. The Exumas offer a different experience, with long chains of islands, brilliant turquoise shallows, sandy beaches and relatively undeveloped cruising grounds.

La Paz is the principal departure point for sailing holidays exploring the islands and coastal waters of the southern gulf.

The nearby Espíritu Santo archipelago is particularly well known for its dramatic desert scenery, sheltered bays, clear waters and marine life.

This is a destination for sailors who appreciate natural surroundings and a sense of remoteness. Wildlife encounters, kayaking, snorkelling and quiet evenings at anchor are among its attractions.

Conditions vary seasonally, with the cooler months generally favoured for cruising, although strong northerly winds can occur during winter.

Belize

Belize lies on the Caribbean coast of Central America, with an extensive barrier reef and numerous offshore islands, locally known as cayes.

The principal yacht charter base is in the Placencia area of southern Belize. From here, cruising itineraries can explore the cayes, reefs and protected waters along the coast.

Belize offers warm-water sailing, excellent snorkelling and diving opportunities and a distinctive combination of Caribbean and Central American cultures.

Navigation requires particular care because of coral reefs, shallow passages and local restrictions. Some cruising areas may require a local skipper or guide, depending on the operator's requirements.

The drier months, broadly from late autumn through spring, are generally the most popular for sailing holidays.

Brazil – Costa Verde

Brazil's Costa Verde stretches along the Atlantic coast southwest of Rio de Janeiro, encompassing forested mountains, sheltered bays and numerous tropical islands.

The principal yacht charter area centres on Angra dos Reis and Ilha Grande, where a network of islands and inlets offers extensive cruising possibilities.

The scenery is striking, with Atlantic rainforest descending towards sandy beaches and secluded anchorages. Historic coastal settlements, local restaurants and traditional fishing communities add to the appeal.

The region has a tropical to subtropical climate, with warm conditions for much of the year. Summer is generally hotter and wetter, while the cooler months can provide more settled cruising opportunities.

Brazil is an attractive alternative for sailors seeking a less conventional international charter destination.

The distances, climate and sailing conditions across the Americas make it important to choose your destination carefully.

Some cruising grounds are suited to relatively short passages and relaxed island-hopping. Others require more experience, careful navigation or a greater degree of independence.
