About yacht charters in New Zealand

New Zealand's largest city is Auckland, gateway to the Hauraki Gulf cruising grounds and beyond. These waters have over 76 islands to explore during your cruise, and you are never far from a peaceful haven. There are literally hundreds of sheltered anchorages on the doorstep of the "City of Sails" in the Hauraki Gulf.

The Bay of Islands is an equally renowned cruising destination. Here the cruising choices are almost endless and varied, with anchorages often less crowded than further south. As well as offering stunning natural scenery and abundant marine life, the Bay of Islands area will introduce you to early New Zealand history, being the place of first British colonial government. To collect your charter boat in Opua takes just a scenic three-hour drive from Auckland.

At the top of the South Island, the Marlborough Sounds are a unique cruising paradise; a network of submerged mountain valleys framed by majestic islands with bush-clad hills overlooking tranquil sheltered bays. The Marlborough Sounds are spectacular, with a thousand mile (1500 km) of deep-water coastline to explore.

Due to their location close to Auckland and the climate of northern New Zealand, the Hauraki Gulf and Bay of Islands are the most popular yacht charter areas in New Zealand. The Hauraki Gulf is protected on its outer extremities by the Coromandel Peninsula, Great Barrier Island and Kawau Island. Between them and Auckland lie some 1500 square nautical miles of fabulous island cruising.

The Bay of Islands is a relatively compact area of just 17 km (11 miles) across at its widest point, protected by the landmarks of Cape Brett and Ninepin Rock and opening to the Pacific Ocean  While there are many fine spots in which to drop anchor in the confines of the Bay itself, no Bay of Islands yacht charter is complete without exploring the beautiful nearby coastline stretching from Tutukaka in the south to Whangaroa in the north. A northern New Zealand coastal charter boat holiday beautifully showcases the natural beauty of this spectacular part of the world that is one of the world's premier travel destinations.

New Zealand's climate is island-temperate, and so the season can be shorter than in destinations where a continental landmass determines weather patterns. The best time to charter a boat in New Zealand is during the warmer, drier months from November to April. Temperatures peak in February, the height of summer with very comfortable temperatures for sailing and activity. The prevailing winds blow from the westerly quadrant, south-west through north-west Beaufort 1- 4 between November and April. There is a tidal range of around two metres.
