Yacht Charter FAQs

Can I visit the Spanish Virgin Islands on a charter from St Thomas?

The Spanish Virgin Islands comprise Culebra, Vieques and several smaller islands off the eastern coast of Puerto Rico. They offer attractive cruising grounds, with beautiful beaches, quieter anchorages and a character somewhat different from the more heavily visited British Virgin Islands.

It is possible to reach the Spanish Virgin Islands from St Thomas, and some USVI-based charter operators permit cruising in this direction. However, not all yachts are authorised to do so, and the longer passages require careful planning.

Culebra is the nearer of the two principal islands, while Vieques lies further to the southwest. Both offer rewarding opportunities for exploration, although the exposed passages can be more demanding than sailing around St Thomas and St John.

For visitors primarily interested in Culebra and Vieques, departing from a charter base on Puerto Rico's eastern coast may be the more practical option.

If you would like to combine the US and Spanish Virgin Islands, confirm the yacht's permitted cruising area and allow sufficient time for the additional sailing.

Are there mooring buoys and anchoring restrictions around St John?

Yes. Many popular bays around St John have designated mooring buoys, particularly within the Virgin Islands National Park. Anchoring is restricted in sensitive areas to protect coral reefs and seagrass. Mooring availability, fees and permitted use vary, so charterers should follow current National Park Service guidance and their operator's instructions.
