Yacht Charter FAQs

Do I need a sailing license to charter a yacht in Italy?

Yes, if you plan to charter a bareboat (without a skipper) in Italy, you will need a recognised sailing license. Italian maritime law requires at least one person on board to hold an appropriate sailing qualification, and for safety and legal reasons, this is strictly enforced by charter companies and port authorities.

The most commonly accepted certifications include:

  • RYA Day Skipper or higher (UK)
  • International Certificate of Competence (ICC) – widely recognised across Europe
  • ASA 104 Bareboat Cruising (USA)
  • Relevant national sailing licences from countries such as Australia or New Zealand, accompanied by a sailing resume

In addition to a sailing license, the skipper must also hold a VHF (radio) certificate. This is a separate requirement and is often overlooked. Make sure to bring the original document with you as copies or online versions are typically not accepted.

If you don’t have the required qualifications, or simply prefer a more relaxed experience, hiring a professional skipper is an easy and popular option. With a skipper aboard, you’re free to explore Italy’s stunning coastline without the formalities of licensing, and you gain a local guide with deep knowledge of anchorages, weather patterns, and the best local cuisine.
