Mooring infrastructure in the Society Islands has improved considerably in recent years. Historically, most moorings were privately laid by waterfront restaurants and offered on the understanding that you would dine ashore. While often complimentary, they were not always consistently maintained.
A formal mooring tax now applies to charter yachts, contributing to better maintenance and expansion of designated mooring areas, particularly in high-traffic locations such as Bora Bora. There are now therefore more regulated moorings available in popular anchorages and environmentally sensitive areas.
