When is the best time to go sailing in Italy?
The best season for yacht charters in Italy is from May to October, when you will enjoy warm temperatures, long daylight hours and generally favourable sailing conditions. Each part of the season offers a slightly different experience, depending on your preferences for weather, crowds, and pricing.
- May to early June: Early season is a lovely time to sail with mild temperatures, fewer tourists and beautiful coastal scenery in bloom. Marinas and anchorages are quieter than later in the summer, and charter rates are still in the lower range.
- Late June to August: This is peak summer in Italy, with hot sunny days, warm water temperatures and lively port towns. It is ideal for swimming, dining ashore, and soaking up the full Mediterranean atmosphere. However it is also the busiest and most expensive time to charter, especially in hotspots like the Amalfi Coast, Sardinia, and Sicily.
- September to early October: A favourite among experienced charterers. The weather remains warm, the sea is still inviting for swimming, and the crowds have begun to thin out. There is better availability of charter boats and shoulder-season rates, making this period one of the best for a relaxed and rewarding sailing holiday in Italy.
While the Italian sailing season officially ends by late October, some southern areas like Sicily and the Aeolian Islands can be attractive for experienced crews slightly beyond that.
