Yacht Charter FAQs

Are the British Virgin Islands suitable for a first bareboat charter?

The British Virgin Islands are widely regarded as one of the best destinations for sailors undertaking their first bareboat yacht charter.

The islands are relatively close together, many passages involve line-of-sight navigation and there are numerous established anchorages and mooring fields. The charter industry is well developed, with operators accustomed to welcoming visiting sailors.

These advantages make the BVI particularly attractive to those who have sailed their own boats or chartered elsewhere but have not previously undertaken a Caribbean bareboat holiday.

However, the destination should not be confused with a sailing area requiring little experience.

The nominated skipper must be capable of handling the yacht safely, navigating around reefs and shallow areas, interpreting weather forecasts and managing anchoring and mooring procedures.

Charter operators generally assess experience through a sailing résumé, and formal qualifications are not normally compulsory for standard recreational bareboat charters.

Those with limited experience, or who prefer a more relaxed holiday, can arrange a professional skipper for part or all of the charter.

The BVI also offer an excellent selection of fully crewed yachts for guests who wish to enjoy the islands without taking responsibility for sailing the vessel.
