The Essental Yacht Charter Guide: What to Know Before You Go

Yacht Charter FAQs

What insurance covers the yacht and is getting it complicated?

Every reputable charter operator includes full hull and third-party insurance on the boat as part of your charter agreement. You are not required to arrange separate boat insurance.

What does that mean in practice?

The yacht is insured by the operator for:

  • Hull damage
  • Machinery damage
  • Third-party liability
  • Accidental incidents

However — and this is important — there is always an excess (deductible). That excess is covered by your security bond.

What is the security bond?

Before your departure from the base, the operator takes a credit card pre-authorisation or holds a refundable deposit. This amount typically ranges from €1,500 to €5,000 / USD 2,000 -6,000, generally higher for larger or premium yachts. If no damage occurs, it is fully released at the end of charter.

This structure is outlined in our Essential Yacht Charter Guide and is standard practice worldwide. In most destinations it is possible to reduce the security bond. There are usually two options:

Damage Waiver (through the operator)

This reduces the bond significantly and can in some instances remove it entirely. For that there is a non-refundable fee

Security Bond Insurance (third party insurer)

This is purchased independently to cover the excess amount and is often cheaper than damage waiver

We help you assess which option is better value in your destination. This is where experience matters: some operators price waivers aggressively; others offer fair terms.

Is the yacht insurance process complicated?

Not when it is properly explained. What creates confusion is booking through platforms that:

  • Show only the base charter price
  • Don’t explain excess exposure
  • Leave insurance discussion until arrival at the base

We ensure that before you pay and so there are no surprises at the base, you understand:

  • The bond amount
  • Damage waiver options
  • What is covered and what is not

Some events are not covered by yacht insurance, Common exclusions include:

  • Gross negligence
  • Intentional damage
  • Ignoring weather restrictions
  • Taking the boat outside permitted cruising grounds

This is why proper pre-charter briefing and realistic itinerary planning matter. A good broker discusses these things upfront. Booking through Sail Connections doesn't change the structure of the insurance process, but it improves the clarity, because we:

  • Pre-clear your skipper credentials
  • Explain bond exposure in advance
  • Outline waiver options
  • Clarify inclusions and exclusions
  • Review charter contracts before deposit transfer

As detailed in our Essential Guide, paperwork and contract clarity are critical to a smooth charter. Insurance should provide peace of mind — not uncertainty.

If you’re unsure which damage waiver or bond insurance option makes sense for your charter destination, talk to your charterbroker who understands the fine print — not just the headline price. We’re here to make sure everything is clear long before you step aboard.

And of course, arrange your own personal travel insurance to cover yourself and your trip, disclosing your charter plans as and when required by your travel insurance provider.
