Yacht Charter FAQs

What sailing qualifications are required to bareboat charter in the Caribbean?

Unlike some other regions, most Caribbean destinations do not require a formal sailing licence to charter a bareboat. However, you must demonstrate sufficient experience and competence to safely operate the vessel. Certain destinations may require a VHF radio license,

Charter companies will ask you to complete a sailing resume, which outlines your previous experience as skipper or crew on similar-sized yachts. Typically, they look for a skipper who has skippered a comparable vessel and a crew member capable of supporting them.

While formal qualifications such as the ICC (International Certificate of Competence) or RYA Day Skipper Practical are not strictly required in most areas, they are strongly recommended—especially if you plan to charter in French Caribbean territories like Martinique or Guadeloupe, where regulations can be stricter.

By destination:

British Virgin Islands, Bahamas, Grenada, St. Vincent – A sailing resume is usually sufficient.
French territories (e.g. Martinique, Guadeloupe) – A formal certificate may be requested.
St. Martin – Requirements vary depending on which side (Dutch or French) you charter from.
Regardless of destination, all charterers receive a thorough boat orientation and area briefing before departure.

When you charter through us, we’ll guide you through the requirements for your chosen destination and support you through the qualification process.

When chartering through a professional broker like Sail Connections, all regulatory requirements are clearly explained at the time of booking. If necessary we guide you through the qualification process, assist with any paperwork, and ensure you’re matched with destinations and boats that suit your skill level and certification. We help you have your approved skipper status before we hand over the deposit.
