Lefkas, also known as Lefkada, is connected to the Greek mainland by a causeway and floating bridge, making it unusually accessible for an island destination.

Lefkas Town, at the northern end of the island, is a major centre for yacht charter operations. From here, yachts can travel south through the sheltered Lefkas Canal into one of the most popular cruising areas in Greece.

The island's eastern coastline offers attractive harbours and anchorages, including Nidri, Nikiana and Sivota Bay. The western coastline is more exposed, with impressive cliffs and beaches such as Porto Katsiki and Egremni.

Vathi is a charming harbour village with waterfront tavernas and a peaceful setting. Spartochori, perched above Porto Spilia, offers attractive views across the surrounding islands.

The bays of Abelike and Kapali are among Meganisi's appealing anchorages, while the island's southern peninsula provides a more remote coastline to explore.

Ithaca – Mythology and Maritime Tradition

Ithaca is closely associated with Homer's Odyssey and the legendary homecoming of Odysseus. Beyond its mythology, it is a beautiful island of steep green hills, secluded coves and traditional villages.

Vathi, the island's capital, lies at the head of a large natural harbour surrounded by hills. Kioni and Frikes on the northeast coast are picturesque waterfront settlements and popular stops for visiting yachts.

The island's west coast is particularly dramatic, with towering cliffs and celebrated beaches such as Myrtos. These exposed shores are best explored in favourable weather.

Zakynthos – Turquoise Waters and Coastal Scenery

Zakynthos, also known as Zante, is the southernmost of the principal Ionian Islands. It is renowned for its striking limestone cliffs, sea caves and clear blue waters.

The island's western coastline includes the famous Navagio, or Shipwreck Beach, while the southern shores around Laganas Bay are important nesting grounds for loggerhead sea turtles.

Much of the southern marine area is protected, with restrictions on boating and anchoring to safeguard the turtles and their habitat. Visiting yachts should observe the applicable regulations.

Zakynthos can be incorporated into longer southern Ionian itineraries, particularly for crews with sufficient time to explore beyond Kefalonia.

More Mainland Cruising Opportunities

South of Parga, the mainland coast continues towards Preveza and the entrance to the Ambracian Gulf.

Preveza is a historic waterfront town and an important gateway to the central Ionian. Nearby marinas and charter facilities provide alternatives to starting a holiday from Lefkas.

The Ambracian Gulf is a large, sheltered inland sea known for its wetlands, birdlife and resident bottlenose dolphins. It offers a very different cruising environment from the open Ionian, although shallow waters, local navigation considerations and protected areas require careful planning.

Further south, the mainland shores opposite Lefkas and Meganisi include quiet bays and small coastal settlements that can be incorporated into local itineraries.

Charter Bases and Suggested Cruising Routes

The Ionian Islands have several well-established yacht charter starting points, with the choice of base influencing which islands can comfortably be explored during a typical holiday.

Corfu: An excellent departure point for Paxos, Antipaxos and the mainland coast around Sivota and Parga. A week allows time for a relaxed northern Ionian circuit.

Lefkas: Ideally positioned for Meganisi, Ithaca and northern Kefalonia, with numerous short passages and sheltered stopping places. This is one of the most convenient starting points for a central Ionian charter.

Preveza: Offers access to the Lefkas Canal and central Ionian cruising grounds, with the mainland coast and Ambracian Gulf providing additional possibilities.

Kefalonia: Where charter arrangements permit, this is a useful starting point for exploring Ithaca, southern Lefkas and the surrounding islands.

A one-week charter is generally best spent concentrating on either the northern or central Ionian rather than attempting to cover the entire island chain. With two weeks available, longer itineraries linking several cruising areas become more practical.
