Do I need a licence to charter a yacht in the Balearics?
Spain requires the skipper of a bareboat charter yacht to hold an appropriate recognised sailing qualification. An ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA qualification or an accepted equivalent national certificate may meet the requirement, depending on the qualification held and the yacht you intend to charter.
However, having a certificate is only part of the picture. The charter operator will also want to be satisfied that the skipper has enough practical experience to safely handle a yacht of the type and size being booked. This is particularly relevant if you're moving from a smaller monohull to a large catamaran or have limited experience of Mediterranean-style mooring.
Radio certification may also be required, and individual operators can apply their own competency requirements in addition to the local regulations.
For that reason, we don't recommend assuming a qualification will automatically be accepted. Tell us what certificates you hold and provide an outline of your sailing experience. We can confirm your credentials with the charter operator before you commit to the booking.
If your qualifications or experience don't meet bareboat requirements, that doesn't rule out a Balearic sailing holiday. A professional skipper can be added to many charter yachts, giving you the freedom to enjoy the sailing without taking legal and operational responsibility for the boat.

Are the Balearic Islands good for family yacht charters?
Yes. Short coastal passages, swimming, beaches and a wide choice of places to visit make the Balearics well suited to families, particularly when the itinerary is planned around the ages and sailing experience of the group.
Can I visit Cabrera on a Balearic yacht charter?
Cabrera is a protected island and national park south of Mallorca, and makes a memorable addition to a Mallorca charter. Access and overnight stays are regulated, so arrangements need to be made in advance.
Can I anchor overnight in the Balearic Islands?
Yes, overnight anchoring is a major part of sailing in the Balearics, but environmental restrictions apply in some areas and conditions must always be suitable for the chosen anchorage.
Do I need to book marinas in advance in the Balearic Islands?

What is sailing between the Balearic Islands like?
Sailing within the Balearics combines easy coastal cruising with some longer open-water passages. Distances between the major islands mean itinerary planning should take account of weather, wind direction and crew experience.
Is Menorca worth including in a Balearic Islands charter?
Yes. Menorca is quieter and less developed than Mallorca and Ibiza, with beautiful natural harbours, coves and a relaxed atmosphere. Just allow sufficient time for the passages involved.
Is Mallorca or Ibiza better for a yacht charter?
Mallorca offers greater variety and a larger cruising area, while Ibiza is ideal for combining beautiful anchorages with nearby Formentera and a livelier shoreside atmosphere. The best choice depends on your group.
Can I sail all the Balearic Islands in one week?
Not comfortably. The Balearics cover a large cruising area, so a one-week charter is better focused either on Mallorca and nearby islands, or on Ibiza and Formentera. Allow two weeks if you want to explore more of the archipelago.
