Chartering a boat in Turkey: the state of play today

By Robert Cross

As travelers we are ever-mindful of major global issues. Naturally enough, activities that may potentially impact our security cause us to think hard before visiting certain parts of the world. In considering a sailing holiday, it is important that we do our research and take heed of travel advisories. Before committing to a destination, we should satisfy ourselves that any risks are sufficiently mitigated that we can accept them in order to realise our dream holiday.

For the holiday boat charterer, a case in point is Turkey. Turquoise Coast, TurkeyThe Mediterranean “Turquoise Coast” is simply amazing. To quote Lonely Planet, “a glistening stretch of clear blue sea where gods once played in sublime pebble coves ...”.

Primary gateways to this stunning expanse of coastline are the cities of Orhaniye and Fethiye. From either port you can charter in a range of formats; bareboat independent, in flotilla, or with full crew; explore a part of the Mediterranean that’s stunningly beautiful, historically fascinating, culturally rewarding and so pleasantly uncrowded.

Let’s listen carefully to what the media and officials tell us
about faraway places. But let’s make our own minds up on whether to go there. Charter operators in southwestern Turkey tell us that after a difficult 2016 there is optimism for 2017, and bookings are on the increase.

To quote one leading provider, “Despite what much of the media is saying about Turkey, it is still safe to travel here and nothing has changed in the sailing area”. Some boats have been relocated west into other markets. But the Turkish industry must be given credit for its resilience, and the choices on offer for the most wonderful sailing holiday experience imaginable.

As they are saying in Turkey, “The bays areOn a sailing charter in Turkey still beautiful, the winds are still perfect for sailing and the hospitality of the Turkish people is unrivaled”. Those very people warmly respect their guests for the confidence shown in visiting their country and region. So imagine the wonderful welcomes they give. And there is great value to be had; of course the prices are sharp.

So if you are considering a 2017 Mediterranean summer sailing charter, don’t dismiss Turkey from your calculations. Read up on what the Turquoise Coast has to offer the sailing holidaymaker. Take advice from those who have good contacts on the ground, and make your decision based on all the facts.

There really is so much more to Turkey.
